NCAA FINAL UCLA WOODEN

By Todd Ross

Taste wants to take a moment to recognize the amazing life of coach John Wooden, perhaps the most beloved coach of basketball and maybe all sports, as he passed away today at the age of 99. Coach Wooden is not only one of the best coaches of basketball. . .maybe any sport. . .but you can’t read one story about him that doesn’t also acknowledge what a giving and caring human being he was. His coaching style was a roadmap to both successful basketball and to life. Our thoughts celebrate you and your family!

Through his Women are Heroes Exhibitions throughout the world, Young French artist JR takes you to the sorts of places you may fantasize or hear about on television when some dramatic event occurs, but which are far from the usual tourist spots. In late 2009, Paris was the location of exhibition.

This exhibition is a tribute to women, whose dignity is highlighted when JR puts their photographs up on the walls of Paris and villages all over the world. The women express the hardships they encounter in a world dominated by men, walk side by side with death and often embrace life, moving from tears to laughter.

What I like about this is more the varied reactions - as a video encapsulation, is it hits on art, how art is received, passion and commitment, responses and effect. I really enjoyed this and the scale in which was impacted.

Today is a sad day. Type O Negative is one of my favorite bands of all time. Very unique, dark, vampiresque, and from Brooklyn, NY. Below are two great songs. Peter, you will be missed.

Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT

Ok, so I went to see the movie last night. If you are a fan, this movie provides such great insight into the performer, artist and visionary.

More importantly though, it is a testament to the creative process. Both from the artist perspective, the amazing talent he surrounds himself with and the relationship behind Kenny Ortega (director) and Michael and how they communicate such a grand vision, such as this series of never-to-be-produced extravaganzas.
Put aside all of the drama, legal battles and accusations, personal tribulations associated with Michael and his family and focus on this as a biography of a performer and you will be riveted and inspired. The one thing I walked away from after seeing the movie was his ability to keep infusing “FEELING” - you have to FEEL, when to begin the song, the dance, it all permeates his “being” to be on-time, when it feels right to be-on-time. And seeing him access and communicate that on film makes this movie a must-see for fans.

I can’t believe it’s been 8 years. For me 9-11 has become a day to remember and memorialize those who lost their lives. Here is the video of U2 at the Super Bowl in 2002 with their tribute. I remember this performance well and how it made me feel proud to be in a country united in the face of tragedy.
